Pauza’s “In the Garden” Project Progress

The cedar posts are up! The shade structure and garden deck are starting to take shape. The shade structure will be constructed of cedar posts and beams and covered with cedar slats to create microclimate spaces beneath. The posts are taller than the final design and will be cut to size when ready.

Shaped in an “L” configuration, the shade structure will overlap the main deck, bench and garden deck. Wrapped with slats on top and on select vertical locations, the gesture is designed to be two fold. It will shade with dappled light while defining the different functional zones below and adjacent.

The structure also frames views to spaces beyond. A garden box will be tucked along the garage wall, and a framed view to this area is already prevalent. The garage wall's white blank canvas will create an enjoyable contrast to the landscape plantings and will draw the eye to the background elements.

Working with Cedar

Although a soft wood, cedar is a great material for outdoor use. It is mold and mildew resistant, performs well in wet conditions and can last a long time when treated and regularly maintained. If left untreated, it will darken to a silver grey but can crack and break more readily. The important thing to keep in mind is it’s tendency to twist and bow with change in moisture and temperature so in addition to finishing with a protective coating, members need to be properly sized and fastened for their intended use. The original design called for 4”x4” members, but the change to 4”x6” vertical posts and 6”x6” horizontal beams will increase longevity and performance of the overall structure.

The finish is a transparent oil based stain and was spray applied all sides. The chosen colour is a richer tone than the natural material to deepen the quality of the space. The transparent quality was important to see and experience the natural grain of the warm wood. Although a natural clear finish is also a great choice, the family preferred a deeper tone to the more rustic feeling natural cedar.
