Pauza's "In the Garden" Project Progress

Let's jump right in. This blog is about sharing the work we do at Pauza Design Studio, and our passion for design and gardening. We hope our posts will give readers and potential clients insight into who we are, what we do and what drives us each day.

Let's start with In the Garden. This project is currently under construction and although had beginnings years prior - that is a topic for another day! - it is finally starting to come to life. A full-property landscaping project, the front and side yards have taken shape while the construction in the back yard is in full swing.

The central feature of this project, the Garden, is yet to come. Perennials and edibles sit in holding, waiting to find their forever homes in the green nooks throughout the small yet dynamic design of the back yard. Now as we approach late June, the irises are blooming, and giving off their wonder fragrance.

Planting with Irises

A great option to fill any garden bed, irises come in all shapes, colours and sizes and are a hardy perennial option for the prairies. Surviving cold winters and well equip to handle Zone 2, irises give off their showy display in spring and early summer. Typically blooming just the once, their upright bright green leaves stay throughout the remainder of the season, so it's good to pair them with other summer bloomers.

Enjoy the blooms while you can. Irises invite a gardener to stay in the moment as they don't last long. Cut the stems back after blooming to clean up the foliage. Another key thing to keep in mind is to check the spreading habit. Irises are tubers, so they will spread over the years unless maintained. Other than that, this perennial is a good low maintenance option to add texture and delight to any garden design.

What's Next?

In the Garden should see some big steps in the coming weeks. The shade structure will start to take shape and the linear benching that divides the main deck to the rest of the yard will be starting up soon.

Check back soon to see In the Garden's continued progress!
